Update: Skills in Demand Visa Delayed
The introduction of the Government’s new Skills in Demand (SID) visa has been postponed after the Senate failed to pass the legislation during its final sitting of 2024. We refer to our previous article, and note that the SID visa was intended to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (subclass 482) visa. For now, the TSS visa will remain in place until at least February 2025 when the next Senate sitting is held.
A proposed reduction in the TSS visa work experience requirement from two years to one (scheduled for 23 November 2024), has also stalled. Given these delays, employers are required to rely on current visa programs to address skills shortages in the coming months.
With a Federal election looming early next year, the timeline for introducing and implementing the SID visa remains uncertain. Businesses and skilled workers should consider the impacts of these delays regarding employment strategies, visa eligibility and visa expiries for at least the first quarter of 2025.
